Elected to U.S. House of Representatives

Richard continues his involvement in local organizations and is rewarded with more awards and honors. In March Leonor K. Sullivan announces she will not seek re-election to the House of Representatives. Gephardt quickly files for her vacant seat. Gephardt’s primary opponents are Don Gralike and James Frisella, while in the general election it is Joe Badaracco. He wins election to the House of Representatives, 3rd District of Missouri, on November 2. This begins his almost three decade long membership in the House.
