Jane Ann Byrnes is born on June 2, 1942, the daughter of Adolph Cimfel, a doctor, and Celeste (Coufal) Cimfel in Grand Island, Nebraska. The family moves to the larger community of Columbus so her father, suffering from a brain tumor, will be closer to doctors. After her father’s death, Jane’s mother marries John C. Byrnes, a local insurance agent.
