Meramec Dam & Lake Question (Spring/Summer)
The idea of putting a dam on the spring-fed Meramec River in Missouri began in the late 19th century, but plans for the creation of a recreational lake and flood control project on the river came to the fore in the 1960s. Vocal opposition to the project reaches its peak in 1977, which leads to a referendum on the issue in 1978. President Ronald Reagan will deauthorize the project in 1981.
